Cat Doodles

by Maria Irina 24 Jun 2020 1 comment

Hey! Masha here from Masha Plans! Welcome back to the blog!

Today we’re talking about my favorite thing - doodling. Doodling cats this particular time.

I have tons of doodling experience to share with you guys, as well as cat doodles, tutorials, and a free printable! So let’s just go for it right away!

SUPPLIES

First of course let’s look into our supplies.

When you sit down to doodle, you really just need a pencil and paper. So if that’s really all you have - don’t worry and get doodling right away!

But I thought I also wanted to share some other supplies I really enjoy using when doodling, so you might consider them if you feel like an upgrade.

For my paper, I actually prefer to use a journal, specifically - B5 journal by Archer and Olive.

Doodling in a notebook helps me to see my progress and creates a kind of a doodling collection that I can easily reference later when I’m thinking of my BuJo theme.

I chose B6 size simply because it allows for more space.

My go-to doodling pens are fineliners from Faber Castell. They all have very rich black pigmented ink so it always looks good. Plus! They come in different sizes and it’s really something you can use to add more interest and dimension to your doodles.

Finally, let’s talk color! For coloring my doodles my must and go-to are Zebra Mildliners. If you follow me on Instagram or read my posts here you probably know by now how much I love these.

But they aren’t the only ones, I also enjoy using Tombow Twin Tone Markers and Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens for my coloring needs.

DOODLING BASICS

There is a chance that you think that you don’t have what it takes to doodle, that you’re not creative. Believe me, I had the same doubts about myself when I started.

But what I discovered is - creativity is a muscle, not a secret talent you’re born with. You absolutely can do it, as long as you train yourself to.

Ever since I cracked that and learned how to doodles for myself, I’ve been teaching doodling on my blog. So today here I want to share some of my secrets.

  • Start with a pencil.

No matter how confident you are - you will do better if you start with a pencil. That way you can add adjustments and change your doodle as you go, in case inspiration hits or you make a mistake.

  • Divide doodles into simple shapes.

That’s really the golden secret - you have to train yourself to see everything in simple shapes. That way every doodle will be easier to tackle and you’ll know no limits to what you can draw. I’ll show you later on some examples what I mean.

  • Keep on doodling.

Your first doodles might not look so good. Mine were horrendous! It’s really easy to give up right there and then. But!  You’ll never get better if you don’t do it more often. So just keep it up and one day you’ll see your doodles looking sharp and pretty!

CAT DOODLES

I think we are ready to talk about doodling cats!

I love doodling cats. Real cats- not so much since I’m extremely allergic and can’t be near one for more than 5 minutes. But can video, can photos, cute cat accessories - definitely!

So let’s doodle some cats!

Cats are pretty simple subjects to doodle. Generally, you can divide them into as few circles and triangles, from there it’s very easy to just refine the shapes into a cute little kitty.

Check the step by step tutorial below and you’ll see what I mean. Please disregard that I have a purple and a green cat there - I love playing with colors.

There are so many ways to doodle cats, they really don’t have to be realistic at all - that’s the best part about doodling!

To get your imagination going, here is a page with several different cats. This hopefully will give you an idea of what you’d like to have in your perfect cat doodle.

Actually, you might want to sit down and create a page like that yourself! It’s a great creativity exercise and will help you improve your doodling.
