The Best Use for Each Notebook Size

by Ambassador Team 09 Aug 2025 0 Comments

I’m Gracie (@graciecreates) from the Archer and Olive ambassador team!

As an avid notebook collector, I’ve tried just about every size notebook that Archer & Olive offers. From a tiny A6 to the unique dimensions of a traveler’s notebook, there’s an ideal use for each one. Here’s how I would assign usage to each of the A&O notebook sizes!

Notebook Sizes

A5 (5.75x8.25 in): Bullet Journal

When it comes to bullet journaling, A5 is the go-to notebook size for a reason. I’m now on my 5th (wow!) A5 Archer & Olive notebook for my yearly bullet journal. It’s the perfect size in many ways – there’s just enough pages for me to perfectly fit 1 full year into the notebook, including all of my monthly trackers and full page weekly spreads. The page dimensions are also the perfect size for making monthly calendars, fitting habit tracker spreads nicely onto the page, and daily to-do lists, all while leaving space to be creative or to design your own monthly theme.

B5 (6.83x9.84 in): Sketchbook

Sketchbooks demand bigger pages! Whether it’s for scrawling a million thumbnail sketches where you can see all of them, or feeling free to throw down some paint as a creative brainstorm, bigger pages are better for sketchbooks. You can also make use of the thick, 160gsm pages in A&O notebooks by trying out all of the sketchbook tools you want: markers, paint, pens, and more.

B6 (4.92x6.92 in): Reading Journal

The B6 journals from Archer & Olive are the perfect dimension for a reading journal. I think of a reading journal as a “supplementary” journal – I don’t use it as much as my bullet journal or junk journal, so the size can also be relatively small! The B5 is what I call “slip into your bag” size – perfect for heading to the park or a cafe to fill it in. I also like the smaller page size, as I don’t have as much information to fit on each page when adding my book reviews.

A6 (3.5x5.5 in): Travel Journal

I’m a carry-on type of traveler, and for that, I need the smallest journal possible take with me on my travels! I have been using an A6 from Archer & Olive for my 2025 travels, and it’s perfect. It fits right into your pocket, doesn’t take up too much space in your bag, but still allows you to document every moment of your trip so you don’t forget the little details. Square (8.0x8.0 in): Memory Book/Scrapbook

I’m a recent convert to the square notebook size. I was initially intimidated by the dimensions as I wasn’t sure it would be great for drawing, but I found the perfect use for mine – a scrapbook! The square shape references traditional scrapbook styles while still being compact (& cute). I tend to use the square notebook for more “formal” memory keeping – the larger size allows me to add more ephemera in without having to cut them down to fit – as opposed to my traveler’s notebook, which is more for junk.

Traveler’s Notebook (4.33 x 8.25 in): Junk Journal

The last notebook size is a traveler’s notebook, which I used for my first junk journal last year. I love the unique size of traveler’s notebooks – the dimensions forced me to be very liberal with my cutting/ripping/general distortion of the junk I was adding in, which was a very creatively stimulating process! The short width also allows for a satisfying increase in thickness throughout the months of gluing junk into the pages. The growth in size is impressive!
