Answering The Top Five Questions On The Archer And Olive Acrylograph Pens

by Hayley Remde 29 Jul 2020 2 Comments

Acrylograph Pens

Hey! It’s @hayleyremdeart here, and since I got the Acrylograph pens from Archer and Olive I’ve been inundated with questions about them. However, a few questions were definitely asked more than others. Therefore, I thought I would answer those for you now!

Recommended Supplies:

  • Acrylograph PensA truly unique new product by Archer and Olive.
  • Journal – As always, it will be no surprise to you that my pick is the Archer and Olive Journal. The lovely and thick pages have no bleeding or ghosting, so you get a clean start for every project spread! Also, it means you can decorate the spread without worrying about it.

Difference Between The Nib Sizes

Nib close up

The Acrylograph pens come in two sizes: 0.7mm and 3mm. As you can see in the image above (0.7mm left and 3mm right) there is quite a big difference in the sizes even when just looking at them. But here are some swatches:

Small nib swatch

The 0.7mm is lovely and fine. This nib size is perfect for writing, drawing and smaller details.

Large nib swatch

The 3mm is much thicker. This nib size is more suited to creating lettering in larger fonts and colouring in large spaces.

Overall, both are amazing, but the perfect set for you will depend on what you choose to use them for!

Performance On Different Types Of Paper

Swatched
The Acrylograph pens really show their capabilities when you use them on coloured paper! Above you will see them swatched on the White, Kraft and Blackout pages. I have also used them on other coloured card, and they’re always perfectly opaque!

Example page

You can also use them in many other journals other than the Archer and Olive. They were extremely smooth to use on the Dingbats, Leuchtturm and Lemome, and they didn’t bleed at all. However, unlike on the Archer and Olive, they do ghost quite a lot due to the thinner paper.

Do They Write Over Other Mediums?

The Acrylograph are perfect for adding details to spreads and artwork, even when it’s over other mediums.

Gouache example

In my July bullet journal, I used the 0.7mm Acrylographs to draw in the detailed silhouettes over gouache, and it worked perfectly! The ink laid over the gouache perfectly, and the pens didn’t pick up any of the gouache into the nib.

Second example

They also apply perfectly opaque over watercolour! Which amazingly is something other paint pens I have experienced are not able to do!

Drying Time

Dry test

The drying time can depend on what you’re doing with the pens. If you’re writing with the 0.7mm, it only takes around 6/7 seconds to completely dry. Alternatively, if you’re colouring with the 0.7mm or 3mm nib it’s going to take just over 15 seconds. This is actually quite surprising and I didn’t expect a ‘paint’ ink to dry so quickly!

Can You Use Them With A Ruler?

Using with ruler

Yes!! Ok I was really surprised with this one, but you can use both the 0.7mm AND the 3mm with a ruler! You just have to be careful picking up your ruler, especially if you pick it up right away, so you don’t smudge the ink before it dries. However, the ink does not bleed under the ruler or turn into a big mess like other wet pens do!

Q&A Video

I addressed all these videos and more in a recent YouTube video, so head here if you want to see the pens in action!
