Learn how to create a creative flipbook for penpals, journaling and stationery storage. This step-by-step flipbook guide shows what materials to use, how to fold a simple flipbook, and how to decorate it beautifully using stickers, paper scraps, and other supplies.
Introduction
Hi! I’m Martje, the creator behind @martjes.journal on Instagram. I love journaling, creative paper crafts, and exchanging letters with penpals. One of my favorite little projects to include in letters or journals is a flipbook.
Flipbooks are small, interactive paper booklets that can hold stickers, notes, memories, or tiny surprises. They are easy to make, very customizable, and perfect for anyone who loves stationery and creativity.
In this post, I’ll show you what flipbooks are, how you can use them, and how to create a simple flipbook yourself using materials you may already have at home.

What Is a Flipbook and What Can You Use It For?
A flipbook is a small folded booklet that opens up to reveal different pockets, layers, or decorative pages. It’s a fun and creative way to present small items or memories.
Some popular ways to use flipbooks include:
-
Storing stickers or small stationery items
-
Creating a small gift for a penpal
-
Adding a decorative memory piece inside your journal
- Sharing quotes, photos, or tiny notes
Because flipbooks can be made in many different styles and sizes, they are perfect for different handcrafting projects.

Materials You Can Use for a Flipbook
One of the best things about flipbooks is that you don’t need many supplies. In fact, they’re perfect for using paper and materials you already have.
Here are some materials you can use:
-
Paper scraps or decorative paper
-
Old book pages or envelopes
-
Stickers and washi tape
-
Glue and scissors
-
Small notes or photos
I personally love to use these materials from Archer & Olive. For example this Sticker

How to Make a Simple Flipbook (Step-by-Step Tutorial)
One of my favorite flipbook styles is also the fastest and easiest one to create. It only takes a few minutes and works perfectly for penpal letters.
Step 1: Fold the Base Paper
Start with a sheet of paper and fold it once in the middle, just like a greeting card. This will become the base of your flipbook.
Step 2: Prepare the Inner Pages
Take thin paper — for example old book pages or lightweight paper — and cut them to the size that fits inside your folded card.
Step 3: Create the Accordion Fold
Fold these smaller pages into a fan or accordion shape, creating several little folds. This will allow the pages to open and flip.
Step 4: Glue the Pages Inside
Glue one side of the folded accordion pages onto the short side of the card base.
Then attach the other side to the opposite side of the card.
Finally, add a little extra glue so the card closes neatly and the flipping mechanism works smoothly.
Once finished, the pages will expand like a small fan, creating a simple but beautiful flipbook.

Decorating Your Flipbook
Once your flipbook is assembled, you can decorate it however you like.
Some ideas include:
-
Adding stickers to the inside pages
-
Using washi tape for borders
-
Writing small notes or quotes
-
Adding tiny photos or paper scraps
Flipbooks are wonderful because every single one can look different, depending on the materials and style you choose.

Final Thoughts
Flipbooks are a small but magical way to add creativity to journaling, penpal letters, and paper crafts. They are easy to make, fun to decorate, and perfect for sharing a little bit of creativity with others. See my video about it here:
Whether you use them to store stickers, create a thoughtful gift, or preserve memories, flipbooks are a beautiful reminder that even simple paper projects can bring a lot of joy.
