Hi friends!
My name is Nolana Lynch, and today I’m sharing how I created a summer-themed double-page layout inside the beautiful Archer and Olive journal.
This spread was inspired by our recent trip to New Zealand and the desire to document some of our bright summer outdoor memories. I love the idea and feeling of preserving moments like pages from a favourite book. I wanted the layout to feel layered, whimsical, and full of movement — almost like stepping into a floral storybook scene.

Supplies
Building a Storybook Background with Stamps
To begin this heirloom journal layout, I focused on creating a soft but detailed foundation. Using both the Signature Floral and Enchanted Chapters stamps, I layered flowers and leafy elements across the pages. I used one of my smaller stamp blocks to hold the acrylic stamps. Stamping repeatedly in purple, yellow, and green hues allowed the background to feel organic and dimensional while still maintaining a cohesive color palette. Instead of aiming for perfection, I overlapped images slightly to create movement — a technique that works beautifully for mixed media journaling and scrapbook spreads.
This step transforms blank pages into something immersive and instantly sets the tone for a magical, summer-inspired layout. The video highlights how this all came together:-
Adding Texture with Collage and Layered Papers
Once the background was complete, I began building visual depth using the purple paper from the Enchanted Chapters Collage Pad alongside the yellow floral paper from the Signature Floral kit. I chose pieces that echoed botanical shapes and soft vintage textures to enhance the enchanted, storybook aesthetic.
The key here is contrast — mixing structured shapes with organic florals helps guide the eye across the spread.
I love using my die cut machine wherever possible, and this was the perfect opportunity to create these envelope pockets using one of my favourite dies. I am dedicating this Heirloom journal to writing letters to myself and hence the idea of an envelope stuffed with flowers seemed perfect to me!
Creating Envelope Pockets for Interactive Memory Keeping
To make the layout functional as well as beautiful, I used an envelope pocket die to create two envelope-shaped pockets directly on the spread.
-
A purple envelope pocket holds a 4x6 photo, acting as the focal point of the layout.
-
A yellow floral pocket contains additional photos and journaling cards, allowing more memories to be tucked inside without overcrowding the page.
Interactive elements like pockets are perfect for scrapbook journaling because they invite you to revisit memories again and again. They also make double-page layouts feel dynamic and layered. I chose to stagger the elements, and create further interest by applying one to the lower portion of the left hand side of the page, and the other on the top right hand side of the page.
Bringing the Layout Together
I added more photos and journaling on the right hand side of the page to document the stories behind the images, highlighting various outdoor activities we engaged in during our summer trip to New Zealand. Combining imagery with written reflection is what truly transforms a scrapbook spread into memory keeping.
The finished layout feels like a chapter pulled from a summer story — filled with florals, color, and meaningful moments preserved inside the Heirloom journal.
If you’re looking for creative journaling ideas, try combining stamping, collage layering, and functional pockets. These techniques work beautifully together and make each spread feel deeply personal.
Final Thoughts
One of my favorite things about working in a Heirloom journal is how naturally it supports storytelling. The larger format allows space for creativity while still feeling intentional and timeless.
This Enchanted Chapters layout reminds me that memory keeping doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes it simply starts with stamps, stickers, a few meaningful photos, and the desire to tell your story.
For this post, I have included a printable with some photo strips which are perfect for adding multiple photos to our storytelling layout. What stories are you wanting to tell this season?
